The VG is indeed lacking in the oiling department and some people just refuse to believe it unless its said by one of the "chosen" ones. That said, removing restrictions from the flow path probably doesn't change flow numbers much since there isn't a whole lot of material that you can remove from the original casting. However common sense will tell you that oil will flow around a 70 degree bend faster and with less pressure drop than it will around a 90 degree bend.
